Happy Book Day To You

Today is World Book Day. Who knew? Certainly not me or I would have blathered on about my latest favourite book today instead!

What is a world book anyway? I was being facetious there until I saw the organisers have British and Irish phone numbers and all the advertised events are U.K.-based. Is this like the World Series of baseball, where America wins every year?

Didn't we invent books or something? Hang on, that was the Chinese. And the Germans invented movable type. It must be that we're better at reading them. And Tolkien was British. So that proves it...

Don't know about the UK, but here, "world," when referring to literature, generally means that we can't classify it as American Lit nor British Lit. Anything that doesn't fit into these super-restrictive categories if often just off the radar completely!
