Name And Shame

Pulp fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard is quoted as saying in the late 1940s, "writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wants to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion."

In 1949, he published his concept of dianetics in the pages of Astounding Science Fiction, which suggested cognitive powers and mental health could be improved through discussion exercises - hardly a great leap forward from Freud. However, Hubbard wrote "the creation of dianetics is a milestone for man comparable to his discovery of fire and superior to his inventions of the wheel and arch." Dianetics was expanded into Scientology in 1952 and you know the rest. (If not, check out Hubbard's Wikipedia entry and critical website Operation Clambake for details of the criminal activity and the punishment zones.)

There are lists of celebrity involvement all over the net, but here are some people I hoped would know better:

Beck Hansen*
Charles Manson†
Giovanni Ribisi*
Geoffrey Lewis
Isaac Hayes
J. D. Salinger†
Jason Lee
Jerry Seinfeld
John Travolta
Juliette Lewis*
Karen Black†
Laura Prepon
Leonard Cohen
Michael Roberts
Nancy Cartwright
Neil Gaiman*
Placido Domingo
William S. Burroughs†

* born to Scientologist parents.
† out of Scientology now (or before time of death).

I know almost nothing about Scientology except for one thing: a lot of rich, powerful people seem to be a part of it.

Is that because the religion promotes wellness and prosperity or does it point to a more nefarious plot? [Evil pinkie grin]

Since becoming an expert this morning, I think celebs are more susceptible to their message (whether they take it seriously at first or just have more time for fads) and celebs' voices are heard more far and wide than the average person, which makes them a prime target for an emerging cult.

Actually, if the book Bigger Secrets is right, celebrities in Scientology are treated very much differently than their run-of-the-mill cohorts.

This is hardly different from the rest of society, but after reading how a large part of the Scientology machine is geared toward recruiting celebrities and making them feel even more revered within the cult than they are outside it, it would be hard to see how, on the surface, any of them would have a negative experience of their involvement.

However, if you're going to belong to a thing (and in some of the higher profile Scientology members cases, actively advocate for it) you should do a little research and find out how the regular Joe is treated when he wanders into a Scientology center and signs up. Surely those toons can't believe that every Scientology member is treated the same way they are. The place would go bankrupt (even at the ridiculous rates they charge most of their membership for their "services") if that was the case.

When I first became aware of how many celebrities are a part of this mess, I was a little surprised. After thinking about it more, I'm actually surprised there aren't more. I think celebrities are especially vulnerable to being duped into joining. Many of them have completely lost touch with reality as most of us are aware of it, and they are used to people catering to them and see it as the natural state of life.

I am extremely sad to see Neil Gaiman's name on that list though. Please tell me that's a freakin' misprint.

I'm bummed too, but the sources seem reliable. Check out http://home.snafu.de/tilman/faq-you/celeb.txt for the raw material.

Jason Lee's credibility hung with me on a thread. That thread just broke. Although seeing the real 'Blade Runner' there seemed very incongruous also.

The expression 'The cult of celebrity' has never been so aptly applied.
