Bottle

"As a matter of fact, I have met Saddam Hussein exactly the same number of times as Donald Rumsfeld met him. The difference is Donald Rumsfeld met him to sell him guns and to give him maps the better to target those guns. I met him to try and bring about an end to sanctions, suffering and war, and on the second of the two occasions, I met him to try and persuade him to let Dr Hans Blix and the United Nations weapons inspectors back into the country - a rather better use of two meetings with Saddam Hussein than your own Secretary of State for Defence made of his."

- George Galloway M.P. at the U.S. Senate on Tuesday.

Galloway may be a showboating flashbastard gobshite, but at least he's OUR showboating flashbastard gobshite. Nothing like a bit of plain talking for once. Go George!

For my American friends, "bottle" means cojones. We took a poll and are sure there's booze in the bottle (like "Dutch courage").

Hasn't everyone figured out by now that the Bush Administration is the most subjective group of political introverts to occupy the White House for a long time?

Apparently, it's only the three of us! Coming from overseas it's quite alarming to see what passes for news on the major networks. Must-buy DVDs, celebrity gossip, and virtually no attention to anything outside your own borders. It's lying by omission. The British media is far from impartial either, but at least there's something of a world view. Unless you question what you're told here, you might aswell be in the Truman Show.

The Galloway session showed the sterility of the American political system and how far it's moved from true political debate. The fact that they also expecetd Gorgeous George to just come and be rapt in awe at his audience with the select committee also showed that they didn't do their homework and also their arrogance.

Don't think those qualities are confined to the current incumbents, but they seem to demonstrate them pretty well.

In interview afterwards, the two senators cast doubts on Galloway's credibility. Based on what? Since when has asking questions been inhernetly unAmerican?

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public."

-- Theodore Roosevelt (stolen from a friend's e-mail signature.)

The way we're going, the contents of this blog will probably be grounds for my deportation!

Well let's be real here for a moment - Galloway and credible are a bit tricky to get in the same sentence. I was struck (amazed) by his speech at Bethnal when he won the seat - as a blend of back-handed graciousness to his opponent and paranoia to the returning officer it was pretty unique. If the select commitee had bothered to watch that they might have had a better idea of who they were inviting.

That said, marking as a not credible witness means they actually don't have to see him again and can pretend that he didn't exist. Much better that than address the issues he raised?
